Counting

There has been a lot of talk about counting in our household lately. I'm on a personal mission to make it fun and to incorporate it into play. One of the ways we are using counting through play encompasses a dump truck and little toy car counters. In order for me to give my daughter the toy car counters for her dump truck, she must count the cars correctly in order for me to give them to her. So far it's working. We work on one-to-one correspondence while doing this and pronunciation of numbers. I do not go higher than ten presently. I find she gets confused with one-to-one correspondence if I go too high. This is working for us.

I purchased the dump truck and the counter cars and Lakeshore Learning Store (an outlet). This store is expensive. You don't need to buy these expensive counters. Find things you have plentiful around the house if it works for your little one like beans (large ones), straws, and money. While counting, take opportunities to sort with your child. We empty her piggy bank and separate money into copper and silver. The toy cars I purchased are different colors. You can sort the cars by colors and then count them.

How do you count with your little one?
